Club activities

Training sessions:  During an academic year, we hold 2-3 regular training sessions a week. They are primarily mixed-gender. If there is demand, we allocate one of the training sessions for women/ men only. The sessions are both indoors and outdoors at different university venues around Aberystwyth. For up-to-date information about training sessions, see the information above or join our Facebook group.

Socials: We bond off the field most weeks, usually a friday or a wednesdays. It goes without saying most of the socials have fun dressing up topics or activities that might or might not include visiting pubs, or playing spikeball or throwing a disc on the beach. Alcohol could be consumed at the socials but we try to do our social activities mindful of people who do not wish to consume it. For up-to-date information about our socials, see the information above or join our Facebook group.

Tournaments: We attend numerous tournaments throughout the year both at home, across the country, and in Europe. Every year we attend competitive University Regionals and organise 2 home tournaments - Petting Zoo and Zoo. We also attend a lot of fun tournaments which are worth joining the team. A tournament in Ultimate Frisbee is usually a low-cost weekend-away event. Each team plays 3 to 5 games a day with breaks in between. As many as 30 teams can attend a single tournament. After a match, it is not uncommon for the two opposing teams to play a short entertaining game or contest of their choice (for example Ninja) to show friendly spirit. Fun tournaments are characterised by a competitive but silly atmosphere. They can be topic-based and some teams take it to a higher level by dressing up according to the topic. A programme for Saturday evening is a must, whether it is a party or a treasure hunt.

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate is a sport created by college students in the US. Even 80 years from its creation, the sport maintains friendly student culture and its main purpose is to play fair spirited games full of enjoyment and fun.

Watch the video or read the description below.

Ultimate Frisbee is one of the fastest-growing competitive sports in the UK. It is a collective (7v7 or 5v5) non-contact sport played with a flying disc or  "Frisbee", both indoors and outdoors. There are 4 main categories in Ultimate- Women, Men, Open, and Mix (mixed gender). The field consists of the middle part and two endzones.

The team on offence is the one with possession of the disc. The offence tries to score a point by passing the disc through the middle part of the field and catching it in the endzone of the opposing team, while the opposing team (defence)  tries to prevent them from doing so in a non-contact way. The person with possession of the disc has to establish a pivot point similar to basketball (is not allowed to walk/run with the disc) while the rest of the team tries to get free of their defenders to be able to receive the disc. There are no restrictions on which direction the disc can be thrown.

If a pass is incomplete it is a "turnover". Pass is incomplete if the disc touches the ground, is caught by a defender, is not passed within 10 seconds, or touches an out-of-bounds object (player or ground). When this happens, the defending team becomes offence and immediately gains possession of the disc. The team then tries to score a point in the other endzone. A game could last from 20 minutes to 90 minutes depending on the format. At the end of each match, teams rate each other on the level of practice of the Spirit of the Game. At the end of each tournament, the most Spirited team is awarded as well as the first three places.

Spirit of the Game (SOTG)

Spirit of the Game is the mindful behaviour practiced by players prior to, during, and after a game. It encompasses attitudes and skills such as good knowledge and application of the rules, fair-mindedness, safe play, and spatial awareness, clear and calm communication, and positive and respectful attitude towards teammates, fans, and opponents, in a mutual effort to protect the basic joy of play.- WFDF
