#AberSUCelebrates2020: Biggest Contribution Non-Charity Society RAG – GeogSoc

Dim sgoriau eto. Mewngofnodi i Raddio

The ‘Biggest Contribution from a Non-Charity Society’ is awarded to a society whose members have freely given a significant amount of their time to a good cause throughout the year, has spent a significant amount of time helping the student or local community, or raised a large amount for charity.

This year sees the Geography Society’s (GeogSoc) as our worthy winner. Throughout the year they have actively contributed to the RAG total, raising over £500 for their chosen charity, Marie Curie.

One nomination noted how close the charity is to many on the committee, with one committee member giving an account of their family's recent experience with the charity, and how much they were helped. Marie Curie offers a vital service with a crucial message. The charity believes everyone living with a terminal illness should be able to get the most from the time they have left, however hard that may sometimes feel.

The group successfully ran a RAG week each term. The first term saw them hosting a quiz and charity wax auction, in addition to an alphabet social. Then in second term, they upped their game to not only bring back their quiz, but to also host a festival social, charity shop social, a geography themed bake-off and bake sale, a weeklong raffle, and finally a Staff vs. Students football match. Unfortunately, the staff won this time, but next year they will have a chance to redeem themselves!

Equally important as hosting their own fundraising activities, GeogSoc themselves actively got involved in other student groups' fundraising activities, demonstrating their commitment to freely giving their time to a good cause. Throughout the year they have actively gotten involved in Hockey 7’s and Netball 7’s, among many other fundraising activities.

The committee have worked hard on their RAG activities, and it shows. All of what they have achieved would not have been possible without the dedication of the committee and the interest of all their members. The SU is excited to see what GeogSoc get up to next year, and we hope you are too!
