Undeb Aber Statement Following Gender Ruling

Undeb Aberystwyth will continue to uphold inclusive definitions of gender, recognising and respecting trans students and self-identification in all aspects of Students’ Union activity (unless restricted by an external third party such as BUCS or other governing bodies).

We are aware of the distress and anxiety that the Supreme Court decision will create for our Trans, Intersex and non-binary students and beyond. Trans people still have legal protection from discrimination, and we will fight to uphold their rights, but we also recognise that this ruling creates confusion and uncertainty for those that are impacted the most

We believe that the guidance that has been issued is inadequate, confusing and impossible to enforce. In all cases we will seek to workaround the legislation and guidance in ways that uphold our inclusive values and that protect the rights and the mental/physical wellbeing of our trans, intersex and non-binary students.

We do not believe that there is a conflict between the safety of biological women and the safety of trans, non-binary and intersex people and will continue to work in ways that best considers the varying and different needs of all of our diverse student members.
