Eight Free Things to do in Aber!
We’re here to support you with saving money wherever possible, and you should not have to spend money to have a good time! Here’s a list of things you can do in Aberystwyth that cost nothing (yes- NOTHING!). Just make sure you check opening times before hand… and maybe your weather app.
Want to go outside?
o There are two distinct beaches in Aberystwyth known as North Beach and South Beach. North Beach is by the pier, and sandier and South Beach, often quieter, has more pebbles.
o Located near South Beach, the castle was built around 700 years ago and is now completely open air. There are plenty of benches to sit on to admire the view of the rest of the town.
Feeling adventurous?
o Whether you want a casual stroll, jog, or a long hike, Penglais Woods is peaceful and surrounded by wildlife, with several picturesque viewpoints to have a sit down and watch over the town.
- 4 Climb Constitution Hill
o See the view of the whole town and sea from Constitution Hill. Beware it can be windy up there so bring warm clothing (and if you have long hair, maybe a hair tie!).
(If you are willing to pay, there is also a small bowling alley, frisbee golf, and the Camera Obscura (biggest one in the world!) You can also pay to go up or down on the longest electric funicular cliff railway in Britain.)
Beware – there is very little light after the sun sets in both Penglais Wood and up Constitution Hill, so make sure you plan ahead and go when there’s still plenty of daylight left.

- 5 Visit the National Library of Wales
o Located behind the sports centre, the National Library of Wales is a spectacular historic building. It is free to visit their exhibitions and Reading Room, and they even offer free workshops and events that you can sign up for on via website.
- 6 Visit Aberystwyth Town Library
o Lots of students forget to visit the town library, but it’s super easy to sign up for a free membership and definitely worth having a look around all the books they have to offer.
- 7 Visit Aberystwyth Arts Centre
o The largest arts centre in Wales is located right on campus. As well as many paid events, the café, shop, bar and cinema, the Aber Arts Centre also has three art galleries which are free to visit, including a ceramics one on the ground floor.
- 8 Get sporty at Aberystwyth Sports Centre
o If you are a full-time student in university accommodation, you get access to many activities and facilities for free, such as the gym, bouldering wall, swimming pool, saunarium and fitness classes. Just make sure to activate your membership beforehand.
With the Cost-of-Living crisis, it can feel difficult to find things to do without spending lots of money. That’s why it’s important now more than ever to attend free events when you can. The Unded offers lots of opportunities for you to try new things, have fun with friends, and take well-deserved breaks from your course. You should use Freshers Week to try out as many activities and society and club tasters as you can.
That said, never hesitate to try a new club or society later in the year too. Often, clubs and societies will allow you to try out a session or two without paying membership until you have fully decided whether you would like to join. Don’t forget to check social media for free events run by the Undeb too, and remember to contact Student Advice if you are ever struggling financially. Also remember to check the Free Hub located behind the Undeb Underground for free essentials donated by other students.
Another useful savings reminder is to always check whether there is a student discount when shopping in town, and remember to bring your Aber card with you to provide evidence that you are a student!
