What committee are you part of and what roles have you held?

I have been a part of the Beer Pong Society and have been Vice President 20-21, Social Sec for 3 ish months over the Summer of 21, and President for 21-23

What made you want to run for a committee role?

In my first year, the committee running Beer Pong was so welcoming and made me feel right at home at University. It's a big step up from High School and the change can be quite daunting, especially the mad rush of meeting new people and friends the committee and the society helped a lot of people through that initial first step and then helping people to come out of their shells and develop themselves in confidence and social skills. I've run for the committee because I wanted to help everyone get the same welcome and enjoyment out of their first year as I did.

What has been the most enjoyable part of being on committee?

Dealing with sponsors and helping the local area in terms of RAG Weeks and talking with pubs and clubs like Bar 46, Harleys, and Pier. The social aspect and going out each Wednesday have always been a blast. But by far the most enjoyable part of being on the committee is being a part of something bigger, when I hear people talk about enjoying themselves and how they enjoy being apart of the society and how they are doing well with University. Also seeing people believe in themselves given some motivation to jump in with things such as public speaking, talking to the public in terms of RAG selling and meeting with others.

Can you tell us about a time where your role was challenging?

Certain aspects are challenging, the biggest challenge is communication between parts in and out of the society. Communication is 100% needed and it also needs to be positive. I find my role challenging when communication isn't there, where people are left not knowing what to do or I don't know something myself. But there are not a lot of times the role is challenging in of itself.

Do you feel that being on a committee has been beneficial in terms of preparing you for the future?

Absolutely, I have found that my skills have grown and my confidence has grown I have an understanding of what I can do, like I said before public speaking has become a lot easier.

What piece of advice would you give to an incoming committee member?

You have to sink your teeth in, and just go for it. A lot of people don't like approaching or shouting out to others to get attention and get the initial conversation (that you definitely need going into Freshers Fair), you may look like an idiot for 2 minutes or you may get someone to join your society. Fake it till you make it, helps me develop in terms of confidence.
