Lyra Hawkins, AberSU LGBTQ+ Officer 2019/20 has been elected as the National Union of Students Wales LGBT+ Officer.

Lyra Hawkins was elected as the AberSU LGBT+ Officer in March 2019 after a successful campaign focussed on supporting Trans Students, promoting mental health support and working with NUS on liberation and equality for students. She recently attended the National Union of Students Wales (NUSW) LGBT+ Conference and was elected as the Welsh National LGBT+ Officer on July 17th following an online election.

Lyra joins a small team of NUSW Officers who volunteer their time representing students from minority backgrounds or those who may face barriers in education. Having a current officer and Aberystwyth student as part of this team allows us to work on both local and national issues.

Lyra said: “I am really excited to work with the AberSU and NUSW teams this year, especially as there are some big changes coming to Trans healthcare in Wales. This unique opportunity to work on national campaigns will have a real impact on the lives of LGBT+ Students in Wales.”

Over the next couple of months Lyra will be working with the SU and NUSW on her plans for the year ahead – watch this space!
